City starting next phase of ADA improvements on 32nd Street South
Construction for an ADA upgrade project will close 32nd Street South from 5th Avenue South to Central Avenue from Feb. 24 through May 2.
During the construction period 32nd Street South will be closed to all traffic.
The contractor will provide barricades, cones and closure signs in the area of construction.
City Commissioners awarded an $870,085 contract to United Materials for the project during their Feb. 18 meeting.
The project, which is the second phase of a larger project, is to improve pedestrian traffic and comply with Americans with Disabilities Act federally mandated criteria.
City completes 32nd Street South pedestrian project
The ADA improvements will support the connectivity of the pedestrian system in the area by providing an accessible route to a state maintained ADA compliant pedestrian corridor along 10th Avenue South, according to city staff.
The location’s priority was established as well above average by public stakeholders and ADA federally mandated characteristics using metrics established and monitored in the Public Right of Way ADA Transition Plan.
The area was also prioritized due to a future street mill and overlay project scheduled for 32nd Street South.
The project includes installing curb ramps and alley aprons along 32nd Street South from the intersection at Central Avenue through 5th Alley South.

In January, commissioners approved final payment to United Materials for the first phase of the project.
The final project cost is $562,576.20, less than the original award of $594,625, according to city staff.
