City planning storm drain improvement project

City Commissioners will be asked to approve a $288,350 contract to Geranios Enterprises for a drainage project during their July 2 meeting.

The project will address stormwater ponding near the intersection of 5th Street South and 12th Avenue South and eliminate off-street stormwater that flows through the Stadium Sports Bar and Bison Ford properties during minor storm events, which contributes to pooling at the intersection of 5th Street South and 10th Avenue South, according to  public works.

The project will extend the 5th Street South storm drain to the south and add inlets at the intersection of 12th Avenue South and 5th Street South.

There is a subsequent project in the preliminary design stages to improve the storm drainage at the intersection of 10th Avenue South and 5th Street South that is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025 that will focus on mitigating surface flooding during minor storms by adding inlet interception capacity and upsizing storm drain access across 10th Avenue South to the 9th Street South interceptor, according to public works.

City engineering and utilities staff completed the design phase engineering and city staff will provide project inspection.

The city received three bids for the project with Geranios being the lowest responsible bidder.

This project was selected under the public works capital improvements program and budgeted using available funds from the storm enterprise fund, according to city staff.
