Library director position posted, city accepting applications

The search for the new library director is underway.

The job description was posted on the city website last week and applications are due Nov. 30.

Kathy Mora, the current library director, is retiring effective Dec. 27 and Susie McIntyre will be the interim director until a successor is selected.

Mora is also hoping to have the library’s three other staff vacancies filled soon. In late October, she told the library board that they were running background checks on prospective new hires.

The city is seeking candidates with a master’s degree in library/information science with five years of progressive responsibility in library administration including at least three years in a supervisory capacity required. According to the post, a combination of training, education and experience equivalent to a master’s degree will be considered.

The director salary will be $90,000 to $100,000, commensurate with experience, plus benefits, according to the vacancy announcement.

The library operates under a management agreement with the city and the Library Board “has the exclusive power and authority to determine policy for the operation of the library; prepare budgets, authorize expenditures, determine the selection of materials, negotiate contracts and agreements. Under the general direction of the city manager, the city provides various city services in addition to human resources including hiring, firing, disciplinary proceedings,” according to the city.

The agreement also requires that the appointment of the library director be made by the city manager with the board’s concurrence.

City Manager Greg Doyon met with the board several times in October to develop the job description and review the hiring process.
