GFPS board formally cancels May election
The Great Falls Public Schools board voted unanimously during their March 23 meeting to cancel this year’s election and declare the three filed candidates winners by acclamation.
State law allows school board trustees to declare election by acclamation if the number of candidates is equal to or less than the number of open positions.
Since the school board voted in February not to run a levy this year, the board formally voted to cancel the May 5 election.
Filing closes for county races, some contested
That means the three candidates who filed, incumbents Bill Bronson, Kim Skornogoski and Amie Thompson, retain their seats for three-year terms.
The incumbents filed by the Feb. 9 deadline and no write-in candidates filed by the March 2 deadline.
The board must give 30 days notice that an election has been canceled.

Terry Thompson, county election administrator, sent a letter to the district on March 3, giving the 30-day notice that the GFPS board election was canceled under state law.
The cancellation saves the district an estimated $70,136, based on the cost of the 2025 election, according to Luke Diekhans, GFPS business operations manager.
