County corrects error in budget for three mill levies; tax bills are correct
Cascade County Commissioners voted to correct certain mill levies for the Great Falls Public Schools budget.
The numbers were correct on the tax bills and the action corrects the budget resolution adopted by commissioners in September.
The county treasurer’s office submitted the school district budget to commissioners on Sept. 2, which was adopted on Sept. 4.

On Sept. 22, the Montana Office of Public Instruction’s school finance staff notified the county treasurer’s office that the form included incorrect mill levy figures for the school transportation and retirement levies.
During their Nov. 5 work session, County Treasurer Diane Heikkila told commissioners that staff had inadvertently entered the wrong figures for those funds.
She said staff made the necessary corrections in time for printing the current tax bills.
Commissioner Joe Briggs said that Heikkila had taken the issue to the County Attorney’s Office, which viewed it as a simple correction of an error that shouldn’t hold up the tax bills, but should be documented by the commission.
Carey Ann Haight, chief civil deputy attorney, said that it was a ministerial error and the commission doesn’t have discretion on the amounts to levy for those funds, so they were correcting the numbers.
The previous and corrected figures are below.
