GFPS approves Raiders Course for JROTC program

The Great Falls Public Schools board unanimously approved $5,000 for the installation of a Raiders Course at Paris Gibson Education Center for JROTC.

A Raiders Course is “a physically demanding and team-oriented event that emphasizes leadership, teamwork, endurance, and problem-solving under pressure. It is similar to a military-style obstacle or adventure race and is one of the most popular competitive activities within JROTC programs,” according to GFPS.

“It’s a really exciting thing,” Superintendent Heather Hoyer said during the Nov. 10 board meeting.

GFPS’ JROTC teacher Kevin Byrd has worked with other JROTC programs to build the five-item course that will be placed on the south side of the PGEC football field, according to the district.

It will be installed with support from the 819th RED HORSE Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, according to the district, and administrators worked with their insurance provider regarding equipment liability and placement.

The district receives federal Perkins funds toward career and technical education through the state, which approved the use of $5,000 toward the project.

Hoyer said some pieces of the equipment will be removable so the public can’t use it when JROTC kids aren’t there.
