Montana property tax rebate applications open

Beginning Aug. 15, Montana homeowners can apply for the 2025 property tax rebate.

To qualify, you must have owned and lived in your Montana home as your principal residence for at least seven months during the 2024 calendar year.

When applying, you will need to provide the:

  • property’s physical address
  • property geocode
  • amount of property taxes paid as shown on your 2024 property tax bill
  • names and Social Security numbers of both the taxpayer and any spouse

The rebate amount is equal to the amount of Montana property taxes you paid on your principal residence for 2024, up to a maximum of $400, according to the Montana Department of Revenue.

If you paid less than $400 in qualifying property taxes, your rebate will be for the actual amount paid.

Claims will be processed as they are received and rebates will be distributed by Dec. 31.

2026 Homestead Reduced Tax Rates

A property that qualifies for the 2025 property tax rebate will automatically qualify for the 2026 homestead reduced tax rates if:

  • the ownership of the property has not changed, and
  • the property continues to be used as your primary residence

A notice will be sent in mid-October with more information on the homestead reduced rate, according to DOR.

A web application on the DOR website will be available to confirm your property’s qualification status.
