GFPD, CCSO supported search for Anaconda shooting suspect

Officers and deputies from the Great Falls Police Department and Cascade County Sheriff’s Office supported the search for the Anaconda shooting suspect last week.

The Central Montana High Risk Unit is a combined operation of GFPD and CCSO and sent a six-person team to assist in the manhunt in response to the local mutual aid request.

GFPD Det. Lance Souza is a member of the U.S. Marshal Service Task Force and spent the majority of the week participating in the search, according to Lt. Matt Fleming, GFPD’s spokesman and SWAT commander.

Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said that the team responds locally when needed in serving high risk warrants, apprehending high risk suspects, in standoff incidents and more, as well as regionally or across the state when requested.

Law enforcement arrested Michael Paul Brown on Aug. 8 after a weeklong search for the Aug. 1 murders at the Owl Bar in Anaconda.

County officials begin discussion of jail funding model

Brown was arrested in a structure located within the search area, which was previously searched and cleared, without incident. He was being held at the Butte-Silver Bow Detention Center, according to a release from the Montana Attorney General’s office.

“It’s a good day. We got the man. Michael Paul Brown is in custody. I am proud of the unrelenting law enforcement effort this week – federal, state, and local agencies came together to get the job done,” Attorney General Austin Knudsen said during an Aug. 8 press conference.

Woman charged for evidence tampering in fatal crash

Task force officers led by the U.S. Marshals Service and including officers from the Montana Highway Patrol, Laurel Police Department, Great Falls Police Department, U.S. Forest Service, and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation were involved in Brown’s arrest, according to Knudsen’s office.
