Braaten named C.M. Russell Museum director

The C.M. Russell Museum Board of Directors has selected Duane Braaten as its new executive director.

The board also thanked Chris Warden, who has been serving as director and spent five years on the board.

Over the past two decades, Braaten has served the museum in multiple capacities, most recently as director of art
and philanthropy.

C.M. Russell Museum auction hits $9.16 million in sales

Throughout his tenure, he has been a driving force behind The Russell, establishing it as a nationally recognized celebration of Western art and culture.

“This year’s historic auction reflects Duane’s pivotal role in establishing the event as a leading destination for artists, collectors, and enthusiasts alike,” Tim Cashman, board chair, said in a release. “His experience and leadership will be pivotal in advancing the museum’s mission as we move into our next chapter.”

Braaten assumes the role of executive director on April 21 with Warden supporting the transition for the next few months.

“As a Great Falls kid who has revered Charlie Russell since I was a student at C.M. Russell Elementary, the opportunity to be the next executive director of the C.M. Russell Museum is a dream come true, and I look forward to carrying on the exciting plans we have for the future of the museum,” said Braaten. “I also want to thank Chris for his past year of leadership and for helping set the museum up for continued success. While the auction this year was a landmark success, the celebration of the 100th year of Russell’s legacy starting in 2026 is going to be just as exciting. We look forward to celebrating this incredible milestone with the community of Great Falls and the world.”

Braaten was born and raised in Great Falls, graduating from C.M. Russell High School in 1990 and the University of
Montana in 1995. Braaten is married to Sarah Braaten, and they have three kids, Tatum, Oliver, and Will.
