The victim had been gambling at the Club Cigar on Central Avenue downtown, won about $700 and cashed out, according to court documents. She left the bar to drive home but got a text message and pulled over to check her phone.

Ahenakew, who she did not know, knocked on her passenger side window and when she rolled down the window, he asked for a “smoke and a light,” which the victim provided. They chatted while smoking, according to court documents, and Ahenakew asked for a ride to the Crystal Inn.

The victim, who is new in town, didn’t know where that was so he pointed the way and while she was driving, the victim told police that Ahenakew was holding something in his hand that she initially thought was a cell phone, but realized it was a firearm, according to court documents.

The victim told investigators that she remembered getting on the interstate and Ahenakew was “freaking out and moving strangely the whole time,” poking his head out the window and stating “they’re coming to get me,” according to court documents.

The victim missed the exit for the hotel and Ahenakew became agitated, pointing the gun at her head and screaming for her to turn around, according to court documents.

She turned around in the emergency vehicle turnout, exited the interstate and pulled into the parking lot of the Crystal Inn, where Ahenakew told her she’d need to get a room for him, threatening to kill her if she didn’t, according to court documents.

The victim left her vehicle and went into the hotel, paid cash for the room, got the keycard and went back to the vehicle, where Ahenakew demanded the rest of her cash.

Ahenakew left the vehicle and entered the hotel, took the stairs to the third floor and entered the room paid for by the victim around 9:45 p.m., according to court documents.

GFPD officers were dispatched three minutes later and as multiple officers and a Cascade County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived on scene, they cleared neighboring rooms and continued investigating, according to GFPD. From 11:10 p.m. to 1: 44 a.m., officers made repeated attempts to contact Ahenakew announcing he was under arrest, but he did not exit the room until he was told that the city-county high risk unit had arrived on scene, according to court documents.

Ahenakew was out on $35,000 concurrent bond in two separate cases, in which he is charged with felony escape and assault with a weapon.

“It is clear the defendant is a violent, dangerous individual who does not abide by release conditions,” according to the county attorney’s office charging document, in which prosecutors request $100,000 consecutive bond on the new charge.

Ahenakew is being in held in the hospital for medical issues unrelated to his arrest, according to GFPD and the Cascade County Attorney’s Office. They expect he’ll be released Nov. 13 and be booked in the Cascade County Adult Detention Center. He’s expected to make an initial court appearance on Nov. 14.
