Cochrane Dam crossing is June 1

Cyclists and hikers will be able to access and cross the Missouri River at Cochrane Dam from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1.

Normally, the area is only available as an out and back hike or ride, but opening the crossing for public access on this day allows trail users to make a loop and hike or ride both sides of the river on the same trip.

If users are starting and ending in separate locations, participants should know that park staff will not be providing shuttles.

Participants are advised to be prepared for a strenuous 5-plus-mile hike through prairie landscape and there is very little shade during the entire trip, with no access to water for people or pets, and it’s rattlesnake country.

Bikes need to be walked across the dam and pets must be on a leash, according to Giant Springs State Park.

Trail users should expect to encounter heavier than normal traffic during this event.

Cyclists should control their speed, yield to all, stay to the right except when passing, and ring a bell or call out before passing.

A few areas of the trail are rated as moderately difficult and riders should plan accordingly.

Trail recommendations or other details can be answered by park staff at the Giant Springs Ranger Station located at 4803 Giant Springs Road or by calling 406-727-1212.

There will be an option for participants to register for a staff-guided, group hike during this event. Those details will be provided at a later date, according to park staff.
