Ferrin’s celebrating 125 years

Ferrin’s Furniture is celebrating its 125th anniversary in April.

The Ferrin family is hosting an open house 4-7 p.m. April 25 at their store, 308 1st Ave. S.

Three generations of Ferrins will be there to celebrate during the Business After Hours open house event.

Through the month of April, they’re offering specials on Flexsteel, Southern Motion, Intermountain and more, with at least 12.5 percent off everything else in the store, excluding Stressless and Sealy. Every purchase of $100 or more will be entered in to win $1,250 of in store credit for a drawing held on May 2.

The Ferrin’s Furniture building was originally built in 1913 as the Belmont Hotel, and now has five floors of furniture.

Ferrin’s is the third furniture store to occupy the building.

John J. Ferrin founded Ferrin’s Furniture in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1899. A native of Jamestown, NY, he was a cabinet maker and finishing foreman for many Chicago public building interior design firms.

He moved to Red Wing in 1889 as finishing foreman for Red Wing Furniture Manufacturing Company, starting Ferrin’s Furniture.

In 1906, Frank J. Ferrin, Sr. joined his father, expanding the business and purchasing two additional buildings.

In 1937, after graduating from an interior design program in Chicago, Frank Ferrin’s son Joe joined the firm.

In 1952, Joe’s brother Frank Ferrin, Jr. graduated from Notre Dame, became a partner and the company purchased another adjoining building.

In the 1980’s, Frank’s children Anne, Bill and John Ferrin came into the business becoming the fourth generation of Ferrins to run the business.

In 1997, Bill Ferrin moved to Great Falls, purchased what was “Wood World,” and started his own store. Bill’s sons, Andy and T.J. purchased the store in June 2020 becoming the fifth generation of Ferrins to run the business.
