Suspect in custody near Malmstrom AFB, no current threat

The Great Falls Police Department and Cascade County Sheriff’s Office were looking for a suspect in the theft of 4-wheelers on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect was believed to be in the vicinity of Malmstrom Air Force Base, according to GFPD Capt. John Schaffer, and is now in custody.

The suspect was apprehended off-base at 3:50 p.m., according to Malmstrom.

According to GFPD, the suspect did not have a weapon.

Malmstrom Air Force Base posted a real world lockdown on their official Facebook page Tuesday afternoon, but Schaffer said there was no threat and the suspect was in custody.

The base has since posted the all clear on their official Facebook page.

It was a joint operation between GFPD and CCSO, Schaffer said.

Malmstrom issued a press release this afternoon stating that the base went into lockdown as a “precautionary response to an off-base incident.”

According to the Malmstrom release, the GFPD was in a high speed pursuit of a suspect driving a stolen ATV. The suspect was last seen near the perimeter of Malmstrom and in response, the base began lockdown procedures.

Malmstrom security forces airmen worked with GFPD to sweep the area, according to the Malmstrom release.
