County approves $14k contract for mobile kitchen use during jail kitchen repairs
The kitchen at the Adult Detention Center is scheduled for repairs later this month and will be unusable for food preparation during that time.
On Friday, the County Commission approved a $14,855 contract with Yellowstone Kelly’s Catering Company of Billings to lease their mobile kitchen Mat 18-27, plus additional fees for fuel, propane and usage of the generator and refrigerator motor. The county budgeted another $7,000 for those fees, but staff is unsure of how much those fees will total.
The kitchen repairs have been planned for years to address cracks in the floor, according to Sheriff Jesse Slaughter and Undersheriff Cory Reeves.
Slaughter and Reeves said they’d initially planned to use a mobile kitchen from the Montana Air National Guard, but that plan fell through.
“This came up on us so fast,” Reeves said, because county staff had planned on using the Guard’s mobile kitchen. Reeves said the local unit had approved the option, but then higher authorities said no.
The county will continue using the same kitchen staff, they’ll just operate out of the mobile kitchen trailer, staff said during the May 3 special commission meeting.
Reeves said the kitchen repair project is an estimated $80,000 and the repairs will occur while the county has the mobile kitchen later this month.
Commissioners voted 3-0 to approve the contract.
