City evaluating sewer system at fire stations

On Tuesday, City Commissioners will consider awarding a $7,569 contract to Falls Mechanical Services for the evaluation of the sanitary sewer system at all four city fire stations.

The contract will also include a storm sewer investigation at Fire Station 1 downtown.

Sewer collapses were discovered at two fire stations earlier this year.

During a July meeting, Great Falls Fire Rescue Chief Steve Hester told City Commissioners that GFFR was doing renovations in the bathrooms at Station 2 when the floor collapsed and they found a sinkhole.

At Station 4, the floor in the bathroom heaved and “we’re worried about collapsing,” Hester told commissioners.

“We’re at a point now where we’ve got to do something,” Hester said.

The evaluation contract on Tuesday’s agenda will allow city officials to determine the extent of the damage before making plans for repairs.
