Holiday lights contest in the works downtown

The downtown might be looking brighter this holiday season with a new contest being organized by the Business Improvement District.

The BID is expanding the window decorating contest that the Downtown Chicks have sponsored since 2012. That contest was focused on the ground floors and the BID’s concept this year is to expand the effort to upper levels of downtown buildings that will be “bright, shiny and beautifully lit,” according to the BID.

This year’s inaugural contest is open to all downtown property owners and focuses on exterior lighting and decor.

Downtown property owners interested in participating must register with the BID by Nov. 16 and decor must be in place by Dec. 7, in time for the annual Christmas Stroll.

Photos will be taken of the entered properties and posted to the Destination Great Falls Facebook page for a public vote. Voting will be open Dec. 7-14 and the top three winners will be announced Dec. 21.

NorthWestern Energy is sponsoring awards for the top three properties and has donated $500 for prizes, Joan Redeen told the BID board during a Thursday meeting.

Redeen said she’s modeling the idea off an event in Durango Colo. and is hoping to light up the downtown for the holidays.
