T-Mobile store opens, network received height variance for cell tower in Great Falls

The T-Mobile store on 10th Avenue South had its grand opening on Friday.

The cell phone shop is in the space previously occupied by zpizza. It was approved by the city’s Design Review Board last fall and was initially scheduled to open around the first of the year.

T-Mobile has been expanding its retail distribution footprint across the country with nearly 1,500 new locations in 2017 and their nationwide 4G LTE network is now covering more than 322 million people, according to T-Mobile.

On Thursday, the Cascade County Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a height variance for a cellphone tower in the T-Mobile network on a lot in the county’s jurisdiction just off Central Avenue near Chief Joseph Elementary.

The applicant requested a 15-foot extension to be added to an existing telecommunications tower, from 110 feet to 125 feet.

According to the county staff report, the variance would not negatively impact the surrounding area and the tower was an existing non-conforming use.

Since the cell tower is in the vicinity of the Malmstrom Air Force Base, the county notified the base about the proposed height of the project, and base officials did not express any concerns, according to the staff report.
