Children’s Museum master plan

Spark! Children’s Museum of Montana has released its master plan for its new home at 201 2nd Ave. S.

With the new location selected and a new director hired, the organization “embarked on a comprehensive reimagining of the museum’s experience,” according to a release.

The redesigned museum experience begins with a light-filled entryway featuring a custom translucent wall designed by Tony Houtz of Cushing Terrell.

From there, families will explore Little Falls, a playful homage to the local community, featuring interactive amenities, including a bank experience with a dynamic learning floor sponsored by Bravera Bank. A bridge then leads young explorers into Montana’s iconic landscapes, including The Great Indoors exhibit sponsored by Scheels, a hands-on dinosaur dig celebrating the state’s rich paleontological history, and a Learning Lodge honoring Native American heritage.

The development of the new master plan also presented an opportunity to thoughtfully retire older exhibits and invest in a fresh, unified design aligned with the museum’s mission and future.

Former Ivy

Several readers have asked about what’s going on at the former Ivy nursing home, seeing lights on and people about the site at 1130 17th Ave. S.

According to the Great Falls city planning office, a potential buyer, which owns and operates similar facilities in other states, contacted city planners for due diligence information, such as what would be needed to bring the building up to code.

The interested buyer is not the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the city.

Recent social media comments indicated the facility was planned as a VA clinic, which is not the case, a VA spokesperson told The Electric.

Civil Air Patrol

The Civil Air Patrol invites the community to its open house at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 2  at 401 63rd St. S. The event is open to the public and will introduce attendees to the many opportunities available through Civil Air Patrol’s cadet and adult programs.

CAP is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and provides aerospace education, leadership training, and emergency services to communities nationwide.

Youth ages 12–18 can learn about hands-on activities such as flying, leadership development, summer encampments, rocketry, team building, radio communications, search and rescue, and military-style drill and ceremonies. The cadet program focuses on building confidence, character, and leadership skills while encouraging an interest in aviation, science, and public service.

Adults ages 18 and older are also encouraged to attend. Adult members support CAP missions in a wide variety of roles, including emergency services, disaster relief, aviation operations, advanced radio communications, logistics, planning, transportation, aircraft maintenance and youth mentorship. No military or aviation background is required—training is provided, and there is a role for nearly every interest and skill set.

Pilots with appropriate flight time may have opportunities to support search and rescue missions or provide orientation flights for cadets.

Amateur (ham) radio operators can expand their skills by working with new radio systems and emergency communications networks.

CAP meets every Monday at the same time and location, and all interested community members are welcome to attend the open house to learn more.

Crime scene equipment

The U.S. Senate approved legislation on Jan. 15 providing $128,686 to the Great Falls Police Department for the purchase of a crime scene laser scanner and crime scene processing equipment that will allow detectives to more efficiently and accurately document crime scenes.

The legislation previously passed the U.S. House and awaits President Trump’s signature.

“Great Falls is safer when law enforcement has the right tools,” GFPD Capt. Brian Black said in a release. “Thanks to appropriations funding through the U.S. Department of Justice, we now have this advanced equipment to help investigators bring clarity to complex cases, protect victims, and keep our community safe and strong.”

Black told The Electric earlier this month that no funding had yet been distributed.

Black said GFPD didn’t otherwise have the funding to purchase the equipment and he applied through the Community Project Funding request form in April 2025.
