GFFR responds to two fires this week, bringing year’s total to 29

Great Falls Fire Rescue responded to two house fires over the last week, bringing this year’s total of structure fires to 29.

GFFR responded to a kitchen fire at 1430 8th Ave. N.W. on Oct. 20.

The fire was reported to dispatch at 6:39 p.m. and the first engine arrived on scene at 6:44 p.m. to find smoke showing from the house that all occupants and pets had safely exited.

Firefighters entered the house and extinguished the fire that cause heavy damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the home.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental as the stove was inadvertently turned on while items were on the stovetop, according to GFFR.

The home’s occupant was put in contact with the American Red Cross.

It was the 28th structure fire of the year so far.

On Oct. 25, GFFR responded to a house fire at 817 6th Ave. N.W.

The fire was reported to dispatch at 5:48 p.m. and the first engine arrived on scene at 5:55 p.m. to find smoke coming from the front door and windows.

A resident told firefighters that the fire was in the basement and that everyone was out of the house but two cats were still inside. The cats were found safe in the house once the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters entered the house, finding the fire in the basement near the television and gaming systems.

The fire cause significant damage to the basement and the rest of the house suffered minor smoke damage, according to GFFR.

The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical.

The basement fire was the 29th structure fire of the year.

That remains on par with 2024 when there were 28 fires by the end of October. There were three fires last October, comparable with three so far this month, according to GFFR data.

In 2024, there were 19 structure fires from September through December, for a total of 41 that year.
