Library hosting Alzheimer’s awareness event May 29
The Great Falls Public Library is hosting an Alzheimer’s awareness event culminating in a free showing of Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s in the Cordingley Room on May 29.
The Weissman-Hood Institute, formerly McLaughlin Center, for free memory screenings and a research update at 5 p.m.
Kyla from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services will lead free tai chi at 4 p.m. and Highgate Senior Living will provide a free taco bar dinner starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Indie Lens Pop-Up film, Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s, presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS, will screen from 6:30-8 p.m.
The film is the final documentary in a three-part series focusing on neurodegenerative diseases, “Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s” and explores how family dynamics change when a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the library.
Nearly 7 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and family and friends of those living with dementia provide 18 billion hours of unpaid care each year, according to GFPL.
The documentary follows three families and the challenges of their loved ones’ diagnoses, delving into their lived experiences. The film explores how this disease impacts identities and roles in relationships—when one partner becomes a caregiver or how both parent and child are transformed when the traditional role of provider is reversed, according to GFPL.
Indie Lens Pop-Up is a community series that brings people together for film screenings and conversations featuring documentaries seen on PBS’s INDEPENDENT LENS.
