MDT starting pavement, curb project in downtown

The Montana Department of Transportation will soon begin work to resurface about three 3 miles of roadway in five locations in urban Great Falls.

This project will include new pavement markings, signage, sidewalk and curb adjustments, and one Americans with Disabilities Act curb reconstruction.

United Materials has been selected as the contractor for this project, which will begin in late September and last through the end of the year.

MDT awarded the contract to United in July for $1,709,871. The engineer’s estimate was $1,665,332.50, according to MDT documents.

The locations are as follows:

  • River Drive North from just north of Central Avenue West to 6th Street North and from 6th Street North to west of 9th Street North, where asphalt meets concrete
  • Park Drive North from 8th Avenue North to 2nd Avenue North
  • Park Drive North/2nd Street South from 1st Avenue North to the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and 2nd Street South, then continuing south on 2nd Street South to 10th Avenue South
  • 6th Street North from 8th Avenue North to River Drive North
  • 3rd Avenue South from 2nd Street South to River Drive South

Work will take place simultaneously at all five locations.

Once millint activities start, likely next week weather permitting, River Drive will be restricted to one lane, one way and Park Drive will be restricted to one land in the other direction.

River Drive will likely be northbound only, and Park Drive southbound only and both will be fully open on the weekends, according to MDT.

When traveling during construction season, watch for the “cone zone” and workers on the roadway. Crews spend their days working a short distance from moving vehicles, and while they make every effort to work safely, they count on you to pay attention, slow down, and be careful as you pass through a work zone, according to MDT.
