UP advances to semifinals in Frontier Conference tournament

The University of Providence men’s basketball program advanced to the semifinals of the Frontier Conference tournament defeating Rocky Mountain College 95-87 on Feb. 29.

The Battlin’ Bears scored the first basket of the game off a three-pointer but a 7-0 run behind jumpers from senior Jevon Burton and senior Sam Vining gave the Argos a 7-3 lead, according to the recap from UP Athletics.

After a layup from Rocky Mountain College, Burton increased the Argo lead to seven with a pair of baskets.

The Battlin’ Bears scored five in a row, but a three from Vining made it 17-12 seven minutes into the half.

Each side traded baskets until free throws from senior Davien Harris-Williams and back-to-back threes from senior Caleb Currington increased the Argo lead to 12.

The Argos took a 43-39 lead into the break.

The Argos scored the first points of the second half off free throws from senior Jake Olsen, but a three-pointer on the other end from RMC made it a three-point game.

The Argos pushed the lead back out to eight after an and one from Olsen and a jumper from Harris-Williams made it 50-42, according to the UP recap.

RMC had a 9-2 run, but Harris-Williams and Olsen made it 64-53 with 11 minutes remaining.

Both teams went basket for basket until a 5-0 run from RMC made it a four-point game.

Following a Harris-Williams layup, the Battlin’ Bears shortened the Argo lead to two, but a free throw from Olsen and a jumper from Reed kept the Argos ahead by five with five minutes left, according to the UP recap.

Despite late pressure from RMC, the Argos held on to defeat the Battlin’ Bears 95-87.

Harris-Williams led with 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Olsen added 19 points in 22 minutes.

The Argos play Carroll College at 3 p.m. March 1 at Pacific Steel and Recycling Arena at Montana Expo Park.
