A portion of the River’s Edge Trail is closed temporarily for a construction project.

Montana State Parks is closing the trail beginning Oct. 17 until construction is complete to improve storm water drainage issues on the portion of trail that often floods and becomes impassable.

The closed section of trail is located on the east side of Giant Springs Road from the kiosk near the entrance of the Park, to the junction near FWP headquarters. The available route is along the Missouri River through Giant Springs and Heritage picnic area.

The park will remain open daily from sunrise to sunset. Visitors may encounter motorized vehicles accessing the construction site. Please use caution while using the trail within Giant Springs State Park. Staff will be working to complete the project in a timely manner. Earlier this year, a sinkhole developed on a different section trail due to a spring seeping under the trail.

In July, the City Commission approved a $9,000 professional services agreement with TD&H Engineering to provide geotechnical engineering services to assess the trail and provide repair options.

The River’s Edge Trail Foundation advised over the summer to use caution on the section of trail that has sunken on the south side of the river between Black Eagle Dam and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

Park and Recreation staff told The Electric on Friday that they’ll find out Dec. 5 if the city has been awarded a grant to fix the slide area.
