GFFR responds to house fire, 10 people get out safely
Ten people escaped a house fire early Sunday morning.
Great Falls Fire Rescue was dispatched at 2:35 a.m. Jan. 19 to a working structure fire at 225 19th Ave. N.W.
Crews arrived to find a residence engulfed in flames as well as a camper in the front driveway.
Neighboring houses on both sides were threatened, according to GFFR, and as additional crews arrived, they protected the exposures and started to attack the fire.
There were five adults, five children and two dogs in the residence.
All of the people escaped, as did one dog, but the other dog died in the house, according to GFFR.
One child was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
A second alarm callback was issued, meaning offduty fire crews were called in and mutual aid was called for Malmstrom and Montana Air National Guard firefighters to backfill city fire stations.
Due to the cold, a Great Falls Transit bus was requested, and provided, as a warm rest area for the firefighters, according to GFFR.
Firefighters got the blaze under control within about 30 minutes of arriving on scene, but continued working to extinguish hot spots for another hour and a half.
The house and camper were deemed a total loss.
The Red Cross was notified and is in contact with the family.
GFFR is investigating the cause of the fire.
According to the residents, a couple, their brother, and two adult children lived in the house, as well as a three-year-old girl, two 11-year-old boys, a 10-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl.
Neighbors and community members were gathering items for the family on Sunday.
For the children, the family said their sizes are:
- 3T for the girl
- medium shirts for the boys, 10 and 12 in pants
- medium shirts for the teenage girl and 10-12 pants
