The Great Falls Public Schools board unanimously approved a $1,299,400 contract with Jimmy’s Roofing during their Feb. 23 meeting for a roof replacement at Lewis and Clark Elementary.
CTA Architects has completed a study of all the building roofs in the district, according to Luke Diekhans, GFPS’ business operations manager, and the district has been working with Brady Gauer, CTA roofing envelope consultant, for the bid specification and logistics of the project.

The Lewis and Clark roof project is “is in response to ongoing leaks being observed at the internal roof drains within the roofing system. The project addresses these concerns by replacing both the roof system along with all the roof drains of the building,” according to a letter CTA provided to the district, recommending Jimmy’s Roofing as the lowest qualified bidder.
The district received seven bids for the project.

Jimmy’s Roofing bid was $719,000 for the base bid and $580,000 for two alternates for two roofing sections.
The project is scheduled for this summer and will be paid through the district’s elementary school general fund, interlocal fund, and building reserve fund or any combination of those funds, according to Diekhans.
In his letter to the district, Gauer of CTA, wrote that Jimmy’s was a Washington-based contractor that has been doing roof replacement work in Montana since 2003. He wrote that CTA hadn’t previously worked with Jimmy’s but its management provided several in-state references from previous projects.

During the Feb. 23 meeting, Diekhans told the board that the district tries to do roof projects on a rotation since they have a high cost and Lewis and Clark was on this year’s docket and budgeted for this year.
Kim Skornogoski, board member, asked if costs were continuing to increase or leveling off.
Diekhans said that most projects were increasing about 10 percent per year, but the Lewis and Clark project came in close to the Meadow Lark Elementary project from a few years ago.
He said they’re seeing more bids being submitted, leading to more competition.
