City completes 32nd Street South pedestrian project

City Commissioners will be asked during their Jan. 21 meeting to approve final payment for an accessibility improvement project around 32nd Street South.

The final payment to United Materials is $30,669.02 and to the State Miscellaneous Tax Fund for $309.79.

The final project cost is $562,576.20, less than the original award of $594,625, according to city staff.

The cost savings is largely due to collaboration between city staff and the contractor, according to staff.

The project provided a route of travel compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act to connect citizens to each other and larger arterial routes for travel.

The area was prioritized due to a future mill and overlay project scheduled for 32nd Street.

The project installed curb ramps and alley aprons from the intersection at 32nd Street South and 5th Avenue South through the intersection at 32nd Street South and 9th Avenue South.

The improvements support pedestrian connectivity by providing an accessible route to the state-maintained ADA route on 10th Avenue South, according to staff, and the project area was identified as a priority by the public and metrics in the city’s public right of way ADA transition plan.

Construction required temporary road closures in the area and the project is part of a multi-phase plan to complete the ADA route from Central Avenue to 10th Avenue South, according to city staff.

City staff verified the work was completed and the two-year warranty period began Dec. 17.

The project was funded with streets assessment and state gas tax funds, as well as water and storm enterprise funds.
