Some voters may have received a letter from the Cascade County elections office regarding their “grandfathered” identification flag in the state voter registration system.

The grandfathered identification flag applies to those who registered to vote before laws required them to include a driver’s license, Montana identification number and/or the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Terry Thompson, county elections administrator, told The Electric that there are more than 5,000 voters in the county that fall into that category.

Filing closes for city election, primary not needed

She said that the letter includes a form for those voters to update their information so that elections officials can ensure the voter profile is accurate and remove that flag.

Submitting the form is voluntary, but will help ensure the county elections database has current and accurate information for voters, Thompson said.

Those that have the grandfathered identification flag have an active voter registration, Thompson said, and the flag or opting not to return the form does not affect voter status or impede their ability to cast a ballot, Thompson said.

But voters who receive the form and want to ensure their voter profile is accurate can fill out the form, sign it and return it in person, by mail, fax or email.

The next election in Cascade County is the municipal election, which includes the City of Great Falls, and will be Nov. 4, 2025.

Ballots will be mailed Oct. 20.
